Working entirely by hand from the kitchen of her Hampshire home, Liz enjoys a beautiful view of her garden whilst she draws. As a freelance illustrator Liz works predominantly in pencil, which gives her work its signature fine, delicate quality.
Liz made the decision to set up on her own after a relative asked if she would draw the listed properties that they had previously lived-in and sympathetically restored. The illustrations made such unique mementos that more commissions followed. Liz now takes orders for hand drawn building and objects - perhaps a cherished belonging; a meaningful location or a portrait of your home.
Although it is always nice to draw from real life Liz will often work from photographs so that she is not restricted by location.
'valued objects and qualities such as historic buildings, unspoilt countryside, and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous generations... denoting or relating to things of special architectural, historical, or natural value that are protected and preserved...' - Definition of Heritage.
Having studied at Winchester Art School, Liz travelled around Europe, Nepal and India before starting a family. Whilst the family were growing up Liz would draw in her spare time but has only recently made the decision to practice as a freelance artist - a decision she is thoroughly enjoying.
"Elizabeth has illustrated several properties for me. Each drawing has evoked the spirit of these old listed properties. I would not hesitate to recommend her." Mrs Alex Rathbone
"Elizabeth Mellan's work accurately captures that indefinable something about a property which a photograph could never achieve." Nicholas Roberts
